About Us

The Community Health Nurses’ Training School in Akim Oda, Ghana, was established in 1962 to address the shortage of public health nurses by training assistants to support healthcare delivery, particularly in rural areas. Initially, it admitted 20 students annually for a two-year certificate program targeting females with a Middle School Leaving Certificate. Over time, the school expanded its offerings, introducing a diploma in Community Health Nursing and midwifery programs. By 2015, it matriculated 600 students for the 2015/2016 academic year, with 423 pursuing certificates and 177 enrolled in diploma programs. The school has since grown, admitting 470 students for the 2023/2024 academic year and planning a Bachelor of Science in Public Health Nursing. Known for its rigorous training, modern facilities, and community outreach, it has significantly contributed to Ghana’s public health, particularly through the Community Health Planning and Services (CHPS) initiative.

PUBLIC HEALTH NURSE

PHN

A public health nurse promotes and protects community health through education, prevention, and intervention. They work in settings like schools, clinics, or local agencies, focusing on population-wide issues such as vaccinations, disease control, and health equity. By assessing community needs, they design programs to improve wellness, emphasizing preventive care and health education. Their role bridges healthcare and social services, addressing both individual and systemic health challenges.

NURSE ASSISTANT PREVENTIVE

NAP

A nurse assistant (often called a certified nursing assistant or CNA) plays a vital role in preventive healthcare by supporting patient care and helping maintain health and safety standards. In a preventive capacity, they:

- **Monitor Health**: Observe and report changes in patients’ conditions, such as vital signs or behavior, to catch potential issues early.
- **Promote Hygiene**: Assist with daily hygiene tasks (bathing, oral care) to prevent infections and maintain overall health.
- **Support Mobility**: Help patients with movement or exercises to prevent complications like bedsores or muscle atrophy.
- **Educate Patients**: Reinforce basic health education, like proper nutrition or handwashing, to encourage healthy habits.
- **Maintain Safety**: Ensure clean, safe environments by following infection control protocols, reducing risks of hospital-acquired infections.

Working under registered nurses or doctors, nurse assistants are key in preventing health decline in settings like hospitals, nursing homes, or home care.

POST NAP/NAC MIDWIFERY

PNNM

Post Nurse Assistant Preventive (NAP) and Nurse Assistant Clinical (NAC) Midwifery is a specialized two-year diploma program in Ghana, designed for nurse assistants seeking to become professional midwives. Offered by institutions like Tumu Midwifery Training College and NMTC Zuarungu, it spans four semesters with clinical attachments and is affiliated with universities like the University of Cape Coast. The program equips students with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to provide comprehensive reproductive health care, focusing on pregnant, laboring, and lactating women and their babies. Entry requires prior NAP/NAC training and registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Ghana. Graduates are licensed to practice midwifery, often securing employment in Ghana Health Service facilities, clinics, or private maternity homes, contributing to quality maternal and newborn care.
